Artistic Vision | Meet Candace Day

Artistic Vision | Meet Candace Day

A Mother with a dream can never be deferred. And so artist Candace Day much like a mountain, will not be moved... except by faith. Where so many would see reason to sacrifice a goal, Day saw a source to push herself further.

“I will sacrifice my own lively hood to pursue this (art). My children motivate me to chase dreams and move toward freedom and happiness. I had this dream since I was 3 yrs old. I have paid many dues to contribute to the pot at the end of the rainbow."

"I paint, because something ultimately drives me to do so. Creative success, I am not going to say “Oh I just do It because I like to paint”. My darling, I have a vision for the future only for Gods eyes to see. I just take it one day at a time and thank God for each day”.

I couldn't help to ask if she felt God and her “faith” played a big role in the works she produced considering her always upbeat personality, and joyfully she claimed

“Yes, I believe now It does. I know the creative power is his. I am only his vessel.... For real hands up!”

An example of this can be seen in her piece “Thriller” which she describes as touching on themes
such as

“Life and death, the thriller in between. Loved ones and individuals that enter ones life that actually make a difference... Ups and downs. winning and losing. Joy and pain, Patience and perseverance. Travel and influence.”

Or "Victory In The Wake {For the record I do not know if that's the title lol}" where she wrote one day "God is good! I believe his light inspired me to create and find this Image. Victory in the wake.....After walking a long and winding road. To those who are traveling a similar path. Keep moving, your hard work, sacrifices and dedication will be rewarded In his time. No good deed goes undone, Amen...."

A Woman on a mission to make her presence known by setting the world ablaze through her work. An artist with a message... Day's advice to others is frank, proud , inspiring and just flat-out awesome

“Move away things, people and matters that are obstructing you and where you want to be. Clear your space, pray, love, forgive, be free in the mind and soul. Don't let any matter pigeon whole who you are... Yup! Yup!”

Artistic Vision | Meet Haitian-American Artist Belinda Wright

Artistic Vision | Meet Artist Belinda Wright

On Saturday, May 14 in collaboration with Iconic Eye Care we will be having an exhibit of artwork by the trealest of artist that just so happen to be women. Once such artist is the unstoppable force that is Belina.

Belina Buisson- Wright is a Florida native of Haitian decent. Wright was passionate and understanding of the importance of education. After attending college to become a teacher she taught for 8 years only to then set her attention to her sure her children got the best education possible by home schooling. It was during her time teach that she began her long dance with art, experimenting with acrylic paints.

Now a full fledged self-taught artist who would with a humble grace but a firm believe would tell you her talent to create is a gift blessed on to her from the almighty God. Capturing the vibrancy of life, Wright is mused by the arts of her Haitian and African-American heritage.

Of her the subjects of her works she would say she loves to capture people in their elements, from the 'extreme to the mundane'. Belina pays homage to what she believes in the strength, grace and beauty in her 'Haitian' series. A collection of works depicting tall, stylized women carrying baskets of goods.

Residing in Central Florida, with her husband Stephen and for beautiful children. She still has attain the attention of art lovers, collectors and curators all over the globe. Exhibiting both nationally and internationally in traditonal exhibits and in cutting edge online exhibitions. She is a woman who chases her dream. And we are honored to have her work in our upcoming exhibit.

But enough from us. Let's her about who Belina Wright is from her own words:

I am a self-taught artist and because of this I create freely without fear of breaking artistic rules. I have various methods of creating my work and do not like to be labeled as only one style of painter.  My art has a strong Haitian art style influence. Living in the U.S. I didn’t get to experience much of the Haitian culture growing up. This style allows me to identify with that part of my heritage. When I did visit Haiti, as a child, I remembered the movement and the energy of people talking, laughing or haggling in the marketplace and the spirit of community. I try to capture the beauty in the day-to-day and extraordinary features of my cultural background.

I often include faceless stylized women wearing red kerchiefs and carrying baskets. I also use bright colors and random stokes in the backgrounds to create energy and movement. I am a very loose painter. I don’t believe a lot of detail is needed to capture the essence of a piece. Initially you notice the color in my work but if you look closely you will see the beauty of hidden details showing through the layers.

I am currently working on a series of paintings featuring people of color with natural hair and pieces inspired by my recent trip to Haiti. On this trip I was able to view the country with an adult’s perspective. Although there were changes with time and the recovery from the earthquake, the peoples’ resilient spirit is still intact. I want to continue to capture these elements of the country in my work.

We can't wait you for all to see and collect her works!!!

Heroes in Black Arts History: Novelist Ernest J. Gaines

Heroes in Black Arts History: Author Ernest J. Gaines

At the "We Got Dat LIT" book drive, Visualist handed me a book he thought I would enjoy plunging into. It was called "Words to Make My Dream Children Live". A compilation of quotes by various African Americans. For what ever reason the first page I turned to lead me to Ernest J Gaines. After reading the quote "There will always be men struggling to change, and there will always be those who are controlled by the past." I got a itch to learn more about him and it spark a idea.

So under the article title : Heroes in Black Arts History we will explore the legends in all forms of black arts, Beginning with African American Novelist... Ernest J. Gaines.

"Ernest J. Gaines was born on January 15, 1933 at a plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish near New Roads, Louisiana, which is the Bayonne of all his fictional works. He is professor emeritus at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 1993 Gaines received the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (the genius grant) for his lifetime achievements. In 1996 he was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, of France’s highest decorations. He and his wife, Dianne, live in Oscar, Louisiana.

A Lesson Before Dying won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, the most

recent of numerous awards that Gaines has received. A Wallace Stegner fellow in 1957, a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant (1967), a Guggenheim fellow (1971), and a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellow (1993), Mr. Gaines has steadily been recognized for his achievement as a master of the novel and short story. His novel, A Lesson Before Dying, is regularly included in high school English classes. In addition, one of his novels, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1971), has become an undisputed classic of twentieth-century American literature and gave rise to the immensely popular, award-winning TV-movie adaptation starring Cicely Tyson. "

From the pages to the screen to the stage : A Lesson Before Dying

Every legend has their signature piece. And while Gaines created a plethora of amazing art. It's his Oprah Club stamp of approval novel "A Lesson Before Dying" that sets it off!

A Lesson Before Dying, is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940s. Jefferson, a young black man, is an unwitting party to a liquor store shoot out in which three men are killed; the only survivor, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins, who left his hometown for the university, has returned to the plantation school to teach. As he struggles with his decision whether to stay or escape to another state, his aunt and Jefferson's godmother persuade him to visit Jefferson in his cell and impart his learning and his pride to Jefferson before his death. In the end, the two men forge a bond as they both come to understand the simple heroism of resisting—and defying—the expected.

A Conversation with Ernest J. Gaines by Lawrence Bridges

"I try to create characters with character to help improve my own character. And maybe the character of the person who might read me. And I just hope that that book helped me become a better person and anyone else who has read it might become better than he was before they read the book. That's what I try to do."

Hearing him say those words touched something deep within me. It made me reevaluate the stories I've loved and those characters that inhabited the pages.

Ernest J. Gaines journey is a treal one, without a doubt. I encourage to read his works and share it with others.

If you happen to have any of Ernest J. Gaines work that you'd like to donate to our community library, or any other forms of literature please email: exhibittreal@gmail.com

Orealjinal Desjins

As an artist, my desire essentially is to create. When ideas come to me, I don’t explore rules or think back to what I was taught in art class, I temporarily vacate society and enter into my own world. In my art, I am often inspired by trial.

My art is matrimony of opposition. I love the beauty of contrast, light against dark, sharp lines against smooth curves and the necessity of conflict that’s revealed by using a blend of organic and structured shapes, lines and color that form into simple but powerful images.

I find a strange beauty in any conflict. Conflict breeds unity despite opposition, births strength from weakness and celebrates life despite death. How amazing is that? For me it’s absolutely beautiful. I want my art to share this belief with others.

She has been influenced by pop art, surrealism, and graffiti art and she synthesized these qualities into her work ,Her artwork is about intensity of color, curved lines, and daring patterns unified into one language. There is an almost dream-like quality to the rhythm and unfurling of the forms in her work. She said of her work: “My personal quest is to create art with a spirit, moreover, transforming two dimensional materials into spiritual substance. My goal is to continue to use the vocabulary of color in order to speak visually in different languages creating a relationship between the unconscious and conscious mind via abstraction and symbolism."
